I've done a bit of looking around and for the money, there are 3 cars that seem to be most likely as my next purchase:

R129 SL320
R171 SLK 350 / 280
W209 CLK 280 Cab

Now, compared to my current car (Volvo V70) they all have tidgy boots but which of the above has the biggest?

Thx

A difficult one and really depends on whether a power folding hard or soft top is fitted.

For the 129, assume hood down, hardtop fitted.

For others, assume hood up.

For the 129, assume hood down, hardtop fitted. For others, assume hood up.

For the R129 it makes no difference. The soft top folds down into a shallow tray behind the cockpit, which does not encroach on the bootspace. So soft top up or down, the boot remains the same (and probably the best of the 3 you mention here). Hard top on is just the same as soft top down (indeed, it is in there all the time).

The R129 has a good boot. In original form there is a wind deflector in a box which can be secured against the bulkhead at the front of the boot, but that can be taken out for everyday use.

With the hard top off, soft top down, wind deflector in place (secured to the roll over bar, behind the front seats) the R129 has a secure boot, secure glovebox under the armrest and secure door pockets (all of which work on the central locking). Luggage on the back seat is also pretty secure (behind front seats, under the wind deflector) and with the windows up, pretty much as secure as with the top up.

We have done a number of trips with the car in this mode and there is plenty of secure boot/luggage/trinket space. But you do need storage space for the hardtop when not in use (bulky, about 35 Kg, best with a storage trolley which might come with the car in a private sale).

Hope this helps.
