Hello,

I just bought a D reg 250 TD on one of those monday morning ebay things, oops. Anyway I picked her up tonight. I've never had a mercedes before and I noticed that when you pull away the drive is well, err bouncey, its like there is a bit of elastic between the diff and the drive shaft. If you drive it hard it doesn't notice, but hang about and you need to keep the clutch slipping a bit.

Is this normal, am I just not used to it yet or should I be worried and what do I need to check?

yes it has self levelling suspension. Although I've no idea how to tell other than everyone says it does!

It's one or more of these worn:

* engine mounts
* gearbox mounts
* prop doughnuts
* diff bushes
* prop centre bearing

A 250TD will soldier on for years without maintenance but all these parts wear out & affect the drivetrain

the bloke who sold it did say that "If I was being picky I'd do the engine mounts" it seemed a little odd as he said nowt was really wrong with it - so I guess that would confirm that then.

If I inspect them, how do I know if they need replacing? Is it an easy job to swap them over? I've got access to an engine crane but I don't particularly fancy an engine out job!

sorry for many stupid questions - where is the best (read cheapest) place to get new mounts from?

I'm based in north Hampshire (Basingstoke). Are there any friendly independants that are willing to double check things like this then sell the parts for DIY mechnics or do such things not exist anymore?

thanks
Matthew

afaik its just a matter of supporting the engine (your hoist is ideal) and removing the mounts , so no the engine doesnt need to come out.
