I have a lot of brake dust build up on my front wheels.
What is the best way to clean this off,i don't want to fit the rubber dust thingy's you get as they don't look good.

A liberal dosing of normal car shampoo and some elbow grease. Then whip them off and give them a good polish with car wax stuff. doesnt need to be expensive coz you put it on so the brake dust wont grip and should make it better to wash off.

You will need to show me how to apply it.
Don't like the elbow grease bit.

I've got a four year old lad that loves getting dirty. I find he is the best option for clean wheels. He does the wheels while I was the car, team work. Mind you his mother hates trying to wash his clothes afterwards.

getting lazy

I have been known to go down to the car wash and use a jet wash just on the wheels. Stand back and slightly to one side though, as there is a bit of splashback. Normal car shampoo is fine if doing it by hand, bit if you have a caked on problem, you'll need an old toothbrush or a proprietary wheel cleaning brush. Don't wear anything you'd wear in polite company, as you'll look like a collier at the end of a shift by the time you finish. Rubber gloves a must

wheels.

I have been using "Wonder Wheels" spray it on, leave for about five mins then scrub it with a kitchen yellow and green thingy. put a crappy pair of shoes on and job done.

pain in the arse though. shame it doesnt come off with the jet washer

Plain washing powder (Daz, Tide, Surf etc.) and hot water makes a better job than all that expensive proprietary stuff. Good for nicotine-stained headlinings and things also.

Wonder Wheels

Hi sooper coop

Is Wonder Wheels slightly acidic and therefore only suitable for plain alloy wheels?

I have the nice-looking AMG 6-hole wheels which have a coating on them.

i would be wary about using wonder wheels, if you leave it on the wheel, dont wash it off properly or have a flaw in the laquer it will start to corrode your alloys, only use it after months worth of build up of brake dust, and you will get a nice finish. i have used the non-acidic cleaners but to be honest the best thing to have it 2 buckets, one with clean water, one with shampoo, a small toilet brush (!!) and a dedicated sponge for cleaning the wheels, 2 mins on each one and they will look as good as new!! def agree with the wax or polish keeps the wheels looking much cleaner for months. i will clean your car sue, but i will need to give it a good test drive first so i know what shampoo will work best!!

No i don't want neon lights, that's just a bit tacky for a car like this.i just like the sound of the dump valve when you change gears. It would be a long travel just to clean my wheels!

corrode.

yes, its acidic and you have to rinse it very well. But slabside alloys need it, where as a modern SL probably just needs effort.
