Forgot to mention that the service receptionist told me that the unit was only good for 1 million touches on the brake which equates to using the brake every 0.2 of a mile or 300 times a day over the cars 9 years usage assuming use 365 days a year!!! Is it me????????

I forgot to expand on this, if its accurate Mercedes are therefore aware of imminent failure that puts them firmly on the back foot if any consequential damage.
The numbers though ??????????????????/

But of course MB are aware of this, which is why the cluster will give a white warning to get the SBC checked (the system is nearing service end) and plenty of time to have the pump swapped. If the cluster goes red, this would mean a catastrophic system failure that could not be predicted.
As long as the car has been serviced in accordance with MB's instructions the SBC pump will be changed well before end of reliable service life.

The big issues here is that in the UK we are expected to pay for it, whilst in the US they are all FOC.

As has been posted many times there are no records of any fatalities or injuries through SBC failure. Just consider how many 100's of thousands of taxis are running about with this system...

But its changed and charged now, a huge difference to the way things used to be when they got changed without the customer knowing, this is what is causing the alarm

Had you coped my next sentence ...

"The big issues here is that in the UK we are expected to pay for it, whilst in the US they are all FOC"

The line that I copied does not fit in with your next one, and is a time gone by situation that does not exist any more
