At first I thought his style was a put on, but after this length of time I realise anyone who could carry this on for so long would have a successful stage show.

As a burden, well as much as many say don't feed him he often generates a feeding frenzy. There is a skill in that style.
He is a burden if you allow it, otherwise just entertainment - as the Jester.
