Father in law lost his Jag this way in a locked garage.
He does smoke mind you but is adamant he never smoked in the garage.
Never did find out what the cause was. Fire brigade didnt have a clue either.

I wonder, would all warranties deal with this claim? Not all do "consequential damage" so if a faulty battery burns your car to a crisp they'll fit a new battery to the black shell that was your car and leave it at that! Nice!

I think the Mercedes warranty does consequential damage anyway.

Rare, but lots of electrical power, hot metal and flammable materials - it can happen.
I had a ford attempt to self ignite but it couldn't even do that properly - ended up with a melted power connector but had it been near anything flammable, tyhere was enough heat to flame up.
Your insurance will cover it anyway.

I have heard of cases similar in the past, the cause -- Faulty Heated Seats.
So that's the definition of sitting in the hot seat.

Most of our modern cars are very alive when turned off, not the fuel system but that remains under high pressure so a leak onto a hot part baring in mind that a pin hole can produce a quite a jet at any angle.

Had this on the 306 ...nasty smell of petrol when first turned on went away after about 10 mins driving.
Decided to check 1 morning and got a wee face full of unleaded .
the return pipe from the automatic choke type thing( not very car technical) was routed too close to the engine bulkhead and had melted through..
2 weeks after it was repaired a recall letter came in from peugot about this telling you not to worry but bring car in asap

Try writing to some of the consumer affairs programs on the TV or any motoring program. If you are UK based then try Top Gear (if it ever comes back).

The Beeb wanted me to go on TV when I had trouble with a brand new Volvo S40 but I chickened out. Merc wont want the bad publicity at a time when they are trying to repair their image. Try to go as public a possible.
