hi all,

decided to get a c270 estate, approx 2003 or 2004 model.

is there anything in particular i should check? any specific mechanical problems.

are the auto transmissions relieable, i will do doing some towing with the car.

do they have self leveling suspension.

i will be buying privately but will check the cars service history and may get an rac check.

any help or advice would be much appreciated

I would recomend going for the face-lifted model. A lot of the niggles were corrected and the shell is galvanised so rust should not be a concern.

Self leveling suspension was an option but I have not seen it mentioned on any sales notes.

Bought mine in July 2007 with 34k on the clock which checked out. It now has 52k up and so far the "damage" has been:-

Faulty alarm, replaced.
New Glow plugs (5)
Rear pads.
and one service.

No other niggles or sign of rust yet.

I'm very pleased I went for the 270 instead of the 220, I enjoy the extra ooomph when conditions allow. Still get mid 40s mpg, but if money had spread further I would have gone for the facelift model.

Jeepster,

I've got a June 04 model which I believe was the first of the facelift models.

In my 3 1/2 years, the only real fault I have had was a flickering headlamp which MB wanted to charge me over a grand to replace (six months out of warantee). Luckily found a brand new one on ebay for £220.00 (what are the chances of that eh?) and it was about £100.00 for my local garage to fit it.

Auto box has been perfect and no other problems.

PS: - had a puncture once - damn you MB!

Face-lifted models came in 2004/5 and can be identified by their clear headlamps (halogen, all xenon equiped cars had clear lights) and redesigned centre console

Hi jeepster, I don't know what models were affected by the Valeo Radiator Problem, which is serious and affected cars made before Sept 03. Do a search a this forum under 'Valeo Radiator Problem' to find out if C Class was affected.
