Hi all, im currentky looking at buying a C Class. I have a budget of around 15k. I want a 220d and looking at both saloon or estate.
And the Premium model with the panoramic roof and elec seats.

At this price range there is a lot of choice and i see that some have 7g and others 9g gearbox, how do i tell which one it is, it is based on year? Or engine size.

Also anything that i need to be looking out for when buying, common faults etc.

Thanks,

You can tell from VIN number if you have the decoder app (available from relevant app stores) or by counting gear changes if you drive it.

My wife has a SLC250d 2016 that has the 9G box, so I would think about that age. Its a much nicer box than the 7G in my E350CDI.

For a period, both 7g and 9g were used on the C Class and it varied by model/engine. As @LostKiwi has said, the only reliable way is to get the VIN and look it up.

Isn't there a gear indicator on the dash?

I was going to say this....when driving this would be the way to tell, as long as you are going fast enough of course. :)
I had 2 C 300 courtesy cars last year (estate and cabriolet), and when up to motorway speed I seen the indicator show 9...which is 2 more than my car. :p

I can force mine into 9th at just below 60mph with the paddles but it won't do it itself until around 70

Yes you can tell by the indicator...IF YOU ALREADY OWN THE CAR.

Of course, or when driving the car on a test drive for example.
My original thought and comment was in response to somebody saying "if you drive it"
Obviously though if you are driving it whoever owns the car will be able to tell you exactly how many gears it has. :D

P.S. No need to shout. :p

There is but you won't know till you drive and even then it will have to be doing about 60mph before it selects 8th gear and about 70mph before it selects 9th. The 9G is seamless and very smooth so if you can get a 9G that's the one to go for :)

Go for petrol - mine goes into 9th under 50mph if I’m not pressing the accelerator too hard!

Or just pull the left paddle, then pull the right paddle if you see 7 or 8 you have a 9G :)

After searching for the last few weeks i finaly found the right one. I bought it from Carzam, a newish online only car supermarket, so was a bit aprehensive, but everything went smoothly.
Its a 2018 c220 Sport saloon, with Premium package. And it does have the 9g box and plenty more.
Was delivered on Sunday and im very pleased with.

One issue is that it does not have the navigation sd card in the car, so no sat nav at the moment. I spoke to Carzam, who have said that it will be covered by their 100 day warranty that comes with the car. Someone from their warranty deptartment is due to call me to discuss it.

In the mean time i just called Birmingham Central Mercedes to ask how much much a card costs and was told is £425 plus VAT. Cant believe that they are so.expensive. Hopefully Carzam will be able to sort it out soon as dont want to spend nearly 500quid on one.

That’s not right - they must be quoting for the whole Garmin system retrofit. You can get them from £30 or so online and I’m sure someone on here said they are sometimes £99 from a dealer for a proper one. ComandOnline charge £239

14 months ago I bought a SLC25d 2016 from Arnold Clark Birmingham, the navigation SD card was missing.
They sent me one in the post cost them about £90. That is assuming the navigation is fitted to the car.

No definitely just the card.
I asked for a quote to be emailed and it has the part number A 218 906 57 03 memory card.
£403.75 plus Vat £80.75 total payable £484.50.

Have a look at this, no need to buy from MB & I am sure they have the price wrong.
