C Class noises from rear!!!!!

My C220 CDI has developed strange noises from the rear end. Dont really know how to describe it, but it sounds like something is loose. Only happens when I hit uneven ground, or a bump in the road. For all the world, it sounds like something is loose and rattling when I hit rough road, (and there's plenty of them up here!). I was wondering if any other C Class owners had experienced this. I've had the car to the Indie and he cant find anything wrong. He replaced the anti roll bar bushes, but that was more in hope than anything else! Made no diffrence. The latest theory is that it could be the rear shockers, but again...they look fine, so it would be an expensive guess! I've had a look myself and cant see anything, but it defineley sounds like something is loose and moving when the car hits a bump or a bit of rough road. Being an absolute ignoramus in these matters, I suggested cables to the Indie, but he dismissed that. I'm really reluctant to spend £300 on shockers, when he's not even sure thats what it is! Any C Class owners had this?
All suggestions appreciated!

It's not something really simple like a loose spare wheel or tool roll?
The spare wheel came loose evey few months on a previous car of mine and made a lot of noise.

I've got a similar noise at the back of my car, only apparent going over bumps, I emptied the boot, tools and spare and it was still there. It actually sounds like it is coming from under the rear offside wheel arch, I've checked the suspension and there is nothing abnormal or loose that I can see.
I'm now thinking that it is something loose above the wheel arch liner but haven't taken it out to have a look yet, does anyone know what is in there that could be loose and rattling about?
Cheers, Geo.

You could always check the Russian site for exploded diagrams of the area. http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1

Yes, I thought about this possibility too. I got a rattle whenever I went over uneven ground. Nothing was obviously loose underneath the car. I looked below the boot floor panel and the tool roll had jumped out of its locating channel and was bouncing around in the boot. It sounded like it was coming from under the car.

My number plate was loose when I got my car from new. The garage eventually put another bolt/brace in to secure it.

It maybe something as simple as this although I got a vibration noise when idling from this and not as a knock or rattle when hitting bumpy raods.

Proberly a broken road spring. they break right at the bottom, difficult to see.
remove the rear wheels and look with a torch at the lower coil of the spring were it sits on the lower arm. Common fault

I had the rear springs replaced, (one broken, and one weak...apparently!), and I thought that would cure the noise thing. It did'nt...it just made this rattling noise more obvious! I'll try emptying the boot and see what happens. The number plate suggestion is a good one, although I'm sure that it sounds like its coming from the back axle area...but then again sometimes it sounds like the petrol tank area...or maybe the wheel arch area! Stumped!

Excuse my ignorance...but are there any cables, hanbrake for example, that run along the chassis...or any thing similar? Thats how best I would describe this!

Had a look at the link. Basically this guy is suggesting that he pressed the handbrake on...just a couple of clicks, and that eliminated the noise. Dont know how he managed it, as when I try it, I cant hear anything for the warning noise telling me the handbrake is on! Maybe that's why he can't hear the noise from the rear! Further investigation required. Thanks again Geo.

I have just bought a second hand 2005 C220 Avantgarde estate and that noise is doing my head in. Tool out all the loose parts at the back and still got the noise. I asked someone in the back seat where it was coming from and they reckon it is the boot catch. I agree. There doesn't look to be a way of adjusting the catch bar, so it must be a weak spring in the lock. Basically when I go over a bump the boot rattles up and down on the lock spring. Don't know if buying a second hand replacement lock will sort it, if you are all having the same problem! When I shut the boot I can hear the same noise, so I am sure it is that!

Hi you have just added your introduction to a 6 year old thread , I would start again if I were you in the just joined section or a new thread in the bodywork section . If you bourght from a dealer get him to fix it . Good luck .

Seriously, as the original poster - June 2006 - probably had a W203, it may have been the aluminium baffles surrounding parts of the exhaust pipework that rattled. On one I had, this was eventually found to be the cause. Guess, after all this time, we will never know.
