I just can't feel any difference whether I select C mode or S mode on my gearbox. Is it not working properly or is the difference quite subtle? I can't really detect any difference in the mpg stats. Any ideas? Thanks.

I do not feel that anyone finds any difference to the MPG with either mode, on the 722.6 5 speed box C is a second gear start and S is a first gear start.
The gear change points are shifted in both the up and down ranges, S mode holding on to the gears longer than in C

In C the car will not roll back on a hill, that is quiet useful sometimes

I'd keep it in S...except if it was slippery when starting off. Mine doesn't roll back in either...but will creep forward in s...so I can crawl up a hill by flicking between W and S...(if stuck in traffic I hasten to add).

Am I right to assume that C mode would cause more wear to the gearbox? Thanks.

I used C most often as it did give slightly better fuel economy and the set off was slightly smoother with the 7G box

Although willing to be proved wrong, I'm pretty certain that my R Class sets off in 1st no matter whether C or S is selected  and can't detect any difference in either mode.

    A big one
As I've said before, my E220CDI with 5G always starts in first regardless of mode, and there is a significant difference in behaviour between C and S. S holds the revs too long for me: I waft everywhere in C. Despite being the "baby diesel", 400Nm gives a lot of oomph without needing to change down.

I find C more effortless for cruising but it does start in 2nd, 1st is better to start off in unless facing downhill...

Your probably just a bit short of power, I would recommend an E320CDI :p
