If you have a electro fan, there will be two wires coming from it, one goes to the sensor on top of engine nearest the front of the car.

I have only answered the question, how do you tell the difference on the two types of fan. these are both engine mounted fans. Fans in the rad are something else.

If your car has aircon it will be a single electric fan.

A C180 202078/018 uses a visco fan. this is bolted on the front of the engine, one nut to remove it, but you do need a counter holder.

Fans on the rad may be "someting else" but the 202 never had a electrical operated fan that was attacted to the engine

I put the answer in thread 6. Its always a mess up when there a 3 or more different cars in the range, if the first 6 numbers of the vin are given as an ID
one can give a direct correct answer. to have to guess which car we are talking about is a waste of time. Its worse with the 210 where there are 11. If you go to MB for parts or info, the first thing that they do is to ask for the VIN, why should it be different here

ive had a look this morning and it does seem like a single viscous fan, i tried moving it with my hand and it does spin but not too freely i mean it only moves say one repetition seems as though - probably the reason why its overheating.

PS - I have no air con

Thanks

They do not turn easily, but that is no indication that it is faulty. do the carrot test when hot.

Thanks malcolm I shall try that, but I do remember that the fan did not speed up at all when it was i was watching it go higher in temp parked up. I shall try this carrot method

Should I expect the fan to speed up after 85 C - 95 C? or 100 C?

Thanks

The thermo fan cuts in at around 85c, it does not matter if it speeds up at 90c+

The ideal running temp for an engine is 100c, just for refference, electric fans cut in at 100c,

malcolm

If you have to change the thermo unit, cheaper from Euro or GSF the hard bit is that you need the tool to hold the pulley when undoing the 1 nut that holds it on

sorry to sound silly here, but by thermo unit do you mean the viscous fan clutch?

Guys it really is quite straightforward. My 1997 C-180 with aircon has one large electric fan behind the main radiator.Nothing else. A car like my E320 has a viscous fan MOUNTED TO THE ENGINE and if aircon is fitted two additional front mounted electric fans.
The early C-class radiator design on the four cylinder cars are prone to failure and later prefacelift cars like my C180 have the later flat top design.

oh ok mine is a 1996 so should be the same def one big fan, took it for a spin today in traffic, goes to 110 def and stays there..lol until i drive and it cools, the fan does not seem to speed up at all from when its first running,

Also def seems like there is a viscous unit in the middle (like a clutch unit only smaller)

I shud look to replace this hopefully

strange there is no exact answer?

Hi Adam, sometimes it makes it so hard without the VIN, as you say cars with climate are different. Its quite hard looking up individual cars, then you find there are 10 versions. I get fed up asking for the VIN.

hi there, i have a c 180 auto elegance with an overheating problem on tickover and when stationery in traffic jams .My car has a viscous fan which I believe was fitted to these modelsI dont have a/c and cant comment about extra fans etc.I posted on our forum about the problem and was advised to try the carrot test. viz- car at temperature, stick carrot into fan blades and if viscous is shot, fan will stop.I tried it and it works, stopped my fan stone dead.New coupling approx £80 from euro parts.Hope this helps and remember, be careful.
