I have recently bought a 1998 C180 automatic saloon, I am considering pulling a Caravan <1000kg. I asked the local Mercedes dealership for a price for a tow bar and they informed me i would also need an additional gearbox oil cooler. Does this sound right, i would have thought a 1998 gearbox would be able to handle this type of engine braking without additional hardware. Any other comments on towing with this car would be appreciated as i haven't commited to a caravan yet.

I haven't looked that closely at my (new to me) C180. I thought the auto trans fluid would be cooled at the bottom of the radiator like all my previous Benzes. Isn't this the case with C180s or do they need extra cooling?

A lot of automatics do need additional cooling especially one with a small engine which will be working hard to pull such a big caravan.
