C180 Esprit problem

I have had the car for six months, yesterday while driving back from work it slowed down and would no go faster than 40 mph ? so I pulled into a parking spot on the A69. put it in park and tried to rev the engine - would no go past 4000rpm, when it got to this speed the engine started to cough and backfire.
last service was @ 68000 miles. after about 5 miniutes I could drive OK but would not go over 70 mph. need help 'cause can't afford to take it to MB.

hi there, your petrol c180 will not rev above 4000 rpm in neutral because it will hit the rev limiter which will cut fuel intermittantly to all cyl,s.
your prob may be mas sensor. a diagnostic at the dealers might confirm this.

This fault will be recorded in the data base, any garage can read it, it does not have to be MB, there is a difference between back firing and spitting back. back firing sounds from the exhaust where as spitting/coughing sounds in the air intake.
The car is not in the limp home mode otherwise the RPM would be down to 3k.
Could be MAF
could be Ignition
Could be fuel
So have the fault read out and come back if you wish.

MAF problem I would suggest as had similar problem on my car.Only way is by diagnostics test.Make sure they redet the computer after otherwise it come back to haunt you!!
