Hi, I have just bought C180 evo petrol manual. It's done 42,000 miles and almost straight away it started to missfire, but only intermittently. I've had a diagnostic check and the coils and plugs are ok, but the compression on cylinder no. 3 is low (it also looks like a new coil had been fitted to this cylinder suggesting the previous owner knew something). The garage said that head or valve problems are not uncommon with this engine.
Apparently the engine management notes a missfire or problem in a cylinder and adds the number of faults until it reaches 110 and then shuts that cylinder off thus causing the problem.
A mercdes main dealer (Brooklands) knew nothing of the 'common problem' with this engine when I asked them why one of their engines is failing at such a low mileage. They suggested I book it in withthem at £120/hour for further checks. Unfortunatly I bought this car privatley and the previous owner said he never had a problem. Any suggestions ?
Thanks for the help!

What is the problem though? Is there a faulty head? Is it costly to repair? What sort of prices are we looking at here for a fix :(

Thanks alot for your reply, at least some people out there know what they're doing! :D
