C180 - misfire?

Mrs H has a '98 C180 (about 125,000 on the clock) with a problem. It was "missing" and wouldn't pull - especially when heavy on the right foot. At first, it was only rarely but became more common over a couple or three weeks.

It went to our local general mechanic & he changed the mass air thing (hope I'm not getting too technical here). It seemed much better...

Friday morning, however, it was idling very poorly when she started it, lumpy and even stalled once on its own.

I guess it ought to go to a specialist with a STAR machine but any thoughts before we try to organise that?

I doubt the car is worth more than £500 or so and I'm reluctant to shell out too much on it... besides which, it will be a logistical nightmare to get it from Ayr to an indie who will presumably be in the Glasgow area.

Inputs greatly appreciated!

i had a similar idle issue on my c180. Took it for a service, they said it was misfiring (no kickdown or something like that), did a diagnostic to re-set the settings. Few weeks after the idle was dropping as it about to stall (it did stall once). Took it back in and they had to replace the air flow meter. That was a couple of months ago and -touchwood - it seems ok now.
