This morning while shifthing up to 2nd from 1st the gear would not engage, I could not select any of the other gears either. I found I could only select first by switching off the engine, depress the clutch then select 1st or 2nd , then start the engine and then foot off the cluth as normal, any attempts to change gear while the engine is running results in the gear being stuck in neutral. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be ?

Could it be a sign of lack of oil in the box or something worse ?

does your clutch pedal feel 'normal'?

what i mean is does it feel as it always did or does it feel lighter or stiifer or any change at all?
it sounds like you may have a stretched clutch cable to me (if it is a cable??)
otherwise a leaky master/slave cylinder!

Hi,

The clutch feels normal, however when I went back to check the car again, with the engine running if I depress the clutch and try to engage 1st gear I could feel the car move forward slightly (a few mm) even though the gear was not engaging.

"otherwise a leaky master/slave cylinder!" is that an expensive job ?
Is it something a DIYer can attempt fixing ?

it is an easy job, but messy if i remember correctly! you will need a nice large new bottle of clutch fluid and an easy bleed kit is advised if you are going to attempt it yourself. the last car i changed a leaky cylinder on was a 3 series bmw and i replaced both (master and slave) i bought them from german swedish and french and i think it came to about £43 for both! cant say yours will be the same but its a general ball park figure!

Fluid levels OK, even topped up the gear box oil but no difference. I have booked it in for a clutch replacement. I hope thats all it needs.

Update:

I took it to a garage where they originally diagnosed a faulty clutch slave cylinder, thuis was replaced but did not fix the problem eventually after calling a MB dealer the fault was found to be with the clutch pressure plate, its now been replaced along with the clutch. The car has now come back with another problem, the SRS does not go off after the diagnostic checks on startup.
