hello thus, i SUSPECT your front sam is u/s. it will cost you £250 and MUST be coded by a star machine. also it is very awkward to replace if you have never done one, and has about 8,000 wires underneath!! if you remove it you will probably not be able to check it/see anything wrong. so you spend £300 getting a new one fitted by a garage with a star machine, only to find out that your ecu has actually gone? yes, the wipers not working points to the sam, but they are wired through the scm or eis before the sam so it could be this module causing the wiper fault!

i hope you understand why i said the next step is to have it plugged in, i work on these cars all day, but when the star machine goes down i am often completely snookered! very little in the way of meaningful tests can be done with a multimeter when you have issues like yours. but while we are here...

your sam has two relays to power up the starter, firstly the 'P' (large yellow one?) relay powers up a circuit that feeds eg instrument cluster. this should be live with ignition on i believe, check for live at fuse 52 when ign on. this live is in turn switched by the 'S' relay (small black one?) when told to by the ecu. chek for output at fuse 51. the s+p relays are at the rear offside of the fusebox/sam unit next to each other.

***you could try swapping the relays with others on the board...***

Hi

I went to test the fuses as per Alexander P's above instructions - something strange happened, I will write down everything I did and in the same order

I opened the door put on the headlights and then connected the battery.

1. I took out fuse 52

2.Being clumsy I dropped it - so I looked around and took out fuse 43 and put it in position 52

3. I turned the key as per the instructions so that I could test the fuse for an output - the car cranked over several times and continues to do so until I turned it to the off position. I tried the key again and it cranked over several times I removed the key. I tred it again and it cranked over again.

4.One thing I've noticed is that there is a high pitched noise coming from the following location - the long black cylinder which I assume/think is the air filter housing on the battery side of the engine. Only comes on when I turn the key and then disappears.

5. I am quite surprised - I think it may start but at the moment its just starved of fuel , electric and maybe the injectors need bleeding.

I would like your opinion on this.( Or is it a false hope?!)

Thanks

Hi

In the last few days I checked all the fuses several times- strange.

Can anyone tell me what they think the noise coming from the air filter housing maybe?

Is the immobilser or the alarm in that area?

Thanks

You could have an aux air pump that is making the noise or fuel pump maybe

Hi

I wish to thank everybody who has helped in regards to my car.

Radiator fan is fine windscreen wipers etc are fine.

Only thing now is I have five faults 3 are to do with light bulbs (fog lights and indicator lights), the other two are the BAS and ESP (is it the sensor on the foot pedal).

Do I need to run the car a bit or get it onto a star machine?

Or is is it because the car has been rusting in one position for the last four months?

Thanks -esp to all the seniors members Television,Alexander Patient and SamUnit

The ESP lamp should go away when you have turned the steering from lock to lock a few times :D:D
