Have had this brand new car for seven weeks. It is the latest Blue Efficiency model with a 7 speed box and the stop/start malarky.
I never expected the mpg figures in the brochure which are ,in this case literally, miles away from what it is achieving.
So far an overall 40.9 mpg according to the dashboard and I have been sparing the horses. The best that the car has done is 56 mpg on a long run.
This is way off the ( I know unattainable ) 74 mpg referred to in the advertising blurb.
My question is will the mpg improve with mileage - I have done nearly 1,000miles so far - and I imagine that mpg will improve as the weather gets warmer??

It will improve maybe by 10% but I wouldn't expext it to attain the 74mpg without very careful driving

    Combination of urban and rural.
I have been driving the car like I'm on an economy run, never had it on full throttle ; it returned 42.8mpg today on a combined journey of 25 miles.
Overall , now dropped to 39.5 mpg - just clocked 1,000 miles.
Not that much better than my 2004 E320 CDI.

It will barely be warm at 25 miles.

My What Car Mag was delivered today . It has a "True MPG" test on a 220CDI - the pre June 2012 version without the stop/start function- it was interesting to see that the car's trip computer was inaccurate and showed 8% mpg less than that car was actually achieving. The tested car does a combined 47.3 mpg , urban 40.5 and extra urban 54.1.
So I might be getting several more mpg than is being shown - I hope so !

In case anyone is interested , after 3,700 miles the car can now do 61mpg if I'm driving with economy in mind. The Govt. comparison figure of 74mpg cannot ever be achieved unless I drive somewhere downhill and walk it back.
However , amazingly, it did 30.5mpg with the caravan attached.
The acceleration has also greatly improved with added mileage, now about the same as my old 2004 E320 CDi.

My C220 'blue efficiency' recently had the misfortune of developing a crack in one of my alloy wheels while I was in the middle of France 600 miles from home.
My only option was to get home on the space saver spare with a 50 mph limit. Although progress was painfully slow and I pushed it to 55/60 mph the fuel consumption did indicate a best ever 59.9mpg by the time we got home.
Quite respectable but I hope not to have to drive at that speed again :)

Mine is the E-class, so not exactly apples vs. apples, but the same 220 CDI BE stop/start 7G auto nevertheless; about 10 months old, so should be the most economical version out there. So far my average is 41.6 mpg, over 6k miles of very careful and economical driving on a light load. The official fairytale promises 53.3 combined, so I'm considerably off that. Sometimes I get the figure up to the mid/high 40s, but never once have I seen 50+ even temporarily.
