Hi,

After clocking up 1000 or so miles in my c-class 220cdi I bought last week I have seriously broken it!

From reading through previous posts im 99% sure I have a failed intercooler as I have a complete loss of power and a hissing noise that comes from the front of the car.... the car doesnt seem to be hot around the exhaust area so I dont think its the cat, plus warning lights have not come up on the dash, would they if the cat was blocked?

my questions are;

does anyone know where I could source an intercooler cheaply? and secondly how hard is it to strip the front end off to get to it ?(any special tools required etc)

Cant be any harder than a Citroen XM which takes half a day!

Thanks

Matt

If its similar to the E220 CDi, then you have to remove the plastic panels under the engine compartment (no big deal) and then remove the plastic bumper assembly (a bit more complex). The two Charge Air pipes are quite easy to extract from the intercooler, they are held in by a simple spring clip assembly which is easy to pull off. The intercooler can then be unbolted from the chassis. If its perforated, you should see oil in the area of the damage since there is always some engine breather oil in the Charge Air ducting. MB say this is perfectly normal. Check first that neither of the Charge Air pipes have come loose, one did on mine at the outlet of the intercooler which screwed up the whole mixture system.

Just had mine replaced by Steve at SPR Autos (0161 480 6095). I believe he got this from some place in Tameside for £154 +vat, a little better than MB at £224 +vat. I think he's away this weekend but maybe he will help when he returns.
Mine had a little oil leaking from the rupture. Now feels same as before so shows my rupture was sudden.

The job looked like a bitch to me, and as i'm busy giving it to Steve was best. It's unusual for me to find a mechy I feel happy with.

Good luck.

Hi Matey,

No mate I don't mind and can't think Steve would have objection.

Total job was £317 Incl vat. Steve charged for 2.5 hours, would've taken me most of the day once I had found the problem.

The garage is in Stockport close to jct 27 of the M60 (St Marys Way & The Peel Centre). East Portwood Trading Est very close to The Motor Cycle Centre.

I've just replaced trhe intercooler on my c220 cdi (w202). I got a unit from Dronsfields (http://www.dronsfields.co.uk/) for £125. It arrived yesterday and was fitted to the car today. I've done about 100 miles and the car goes better than ever. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Tried Dronsfields, but they do not stock Intercoolers for the W203 220cdi

Managed to get booked into SPR's fingers crossed its nothing more than the intercooler!

All sorted!

Intercooler was indeed split which affects the mixture of air/fuel hence all the soot and no power, Steve at SPR provided a very good service, he even picked me up and dropped me off at the station! Thanks to all for all the advice everyone.

Was this the prob as you all?

Greetings all
My 2002 CDi Estate is sick and it sounds like the intercooler as well!
Wife took it out and phoned me to say it was sick,
No power when throttle pressed,
Lots of sooty smoke out of the engine bay,and the out the back of the pipe!
and a hissing sound,
I dropped the bottom cover and the bay is sooty,
no warning lights on dash.

am i on the right track?

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
Me thinks you have the same problem, there is nothing else that can do that.

soot

Hi Jim

If you have lots of soot around it sounds like the kat has broken up and blocked the centre box, hissing noise comes from the soring loaded ehaust joint leaking, soz sounds like lots of money, front kat and centre box are about £800. hope its the intercooler
