I have a c220 cdi 2002. The glow plug light would come on and go out as it should do, but then it would come back on for about 1 minute and then go out. Then the car would not start from cold. Had it taken to a garage to be checked out, They got it started with easy start but it still took some cranking, would start when warm but still needed cranking. They said it was fuel pressure problem and diagnosed it was injector no2 not building up the pressure and needs to be changed. Would 1 injector stop the car from starting straight away, or is there another problem? I did have had the glow plugs changed before the car went to the garage just incase this was the problem, alas it was not. any ideas ?

Have a look at the fuel lines around your fuel filter and injection pump. Check if theres any air bubbles in there, you may have a fuel leak.

Hi, I have a Sprinter cdi which has the same engine. Recently I had a warm start problem (had to turn over forever before it would catch) and to cut a long story short took it to a diesel fuel injection specialist. He verbally diagnosed a faulty fuel injector and said that it was very common, especially on 02-03 plates. He also assured me that if it was more than 1 injector there was no way it would start. He did a pressure check and indeed found that injector no. 2 was faulty. This was removed, overhauled and replaced. The whole process took a couple of hours and the van now runs perfect. Incidentally it also is about 10% better on fuel economy. Total cost was around £200 inc vat.

Common fault on theses especially after changing the fuel filter is the feed return valve on top of the filter, black plastic bit with two pipes onto it held in by two torx screws. This has a non return valve in as well as a rubber seal and can cause drain back when starting from cold. There coppers to buy so change this and give it a try. I would not worry to much about small bubbles in the fuel line this is normal and as it is a self blleding system some air will always be present.
