I have a 98 c220 diesel and find the back end waves around from side to side sometimes, more noticable in the wind whilst on a motorway. Is this normal? I don't know if the wind catches the back end of these cars, if the ruts in the tarmac left by lorries are the cause or if my car is starting to suffer from defective suspension or drive shafts. It alwys seems to be in the garage for something these days and I wonder if this is normal too. It has 68,000 miles on the clock, the last repair was a seal on the fuel tank had gone and it was dripping diesel. Is this model OK for higher mileages or am I unlucky. I would like to keep it for a couple more years and add 40K to it. It has a full MB service history. I welcome your comments.

I have a 1995 C220 D that does the same thing. I find its not as bad when the fuel tank is full, perhaps it likes a bit of ballast in the back.Keeping the tyre pressue right helped too.

Re C 220 unstable in wind

My 1994 C250D is also noticeably unstable in cross winds. I've had it for almost 5 years now and just put it down to an inherent 'feature' of the C class.

I've replaced the wheels, slightly higher profile, and it's the same (although I didn't change the wheels to get rid of the stability issue).
