could be anything. fouled plugs, shorting H.T., computer malfunction, and a host of other nasties you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Check for loose/frayed/disconnected cables in all the obvious places first, and if you don't spot any, get your haynes manual out. Or go to a friendly mechanic who could once-over it for you. isn't a '98 C220 a CDI diesel (I believe my 95 220 was one of the last petrol ones).
