Hi Smiddy,

I'm picking up a C220CDI tomorrow an ex demonstrator with 8K on the clock :D I'll let you know how I get on with it. On the test drive it drove great and with only group 12 insurance my insurance has come down the best part of £100 :D :D

This will be my third merc but my first diesel. I have had 190E followed by a E280, my wife then talked me into buying a honda CR-V, big mistake :( So I will inform you how I find owning a C220CDI

Thanks cruicky, I got a 1999 Seat Toledo 1.9TDI SE at the mo that goes alright for a 1.9tdi but i want somethin with a bit more of a kick to it this time and a bit more comfort seeing as I do a fare few miles and the drive to the office is a good hour and half and because of the roads your constantly changing gear which is why I wouldn?t mind an automatic its only 35miles from here to Bath so you can get an idea of what the roads are like if it takes a good hour :) I'll look forward to your post, i decided to book a couple of test drives of the C220 and the C270CDI after xmas .

Hi Smiddy,

Yes its got black leather seats, partial electric seats. Took it for a spin last night and I'm well impressed at how responsive it is. Planted my foot down, gearbox kicked down and it pulled away very nicely. In my view it felt as quick, if not quicker than my wife's petrol golf 1.8, yet according to the computor it will do 580miles on a full tank of diesel! I'm going delievering christmas presents today so I'll get to give a good run on the open road.

Hi Smiddy,

I clocked 120miles today on different road types, ie country, dual carriage ways etc. According to the computor my average speed was 48mph and 40.6mpg. I was experimenting with with the cruise control and also heavy acceleration having to pass lorries etc on country roads. I'm well please with the handling and overall performance. I just hate having to park it up :( I traded in the Honda CR-V to buy the C220 and my only regret was buying the Honda in the first place
Before I bought the Honda I was looking at the C220 but I couldn't get anywhere near the real value for my E280  Honda did so they got the deal! In hindsight I should have stuck my neck out and got a better deal out my merc dealer/stealer  I never really liked the feel of the Honda, I can't fault the car mechanically but it just didn't suit me, I've always preffered cars the bigger the better :D

I must admit the more i see and hear about the C220/270CDI the more i want one, 40mpg isnt bad for just country roads and dual carriage ways, I driven quite a few different cars vauxhalls, VW's,SEAT,jag and fords and they just got that kind of 'not right' feel the golf vr6 i drove was quick but not stable the jag x-type was too much like a ford, the focus was well..... a ford, the nicest car i drive is a 51 plate volvo S60 2.0T really smooth the leather seat not only held you in place but were nice enough to have a 3 hour non-stop drive in really responsive, well built car which im hoping the merc will be like like that and more, how much did the merc set you back? i know merc dealers aint cheap but at least you get a good warranty with them.

After xmas im gonna be booking tested drives of the 2 different cars the 220 and the 270, i have already found a couple that have only got 22000 miles on the clock and are a fairly good spec for around £17k which is about what i want to spend.

Hi Smiddy,

The windscreen price started £24999 but I ended up paying £21500, thats for the C220 CDI elegance it also has the optional sports suspension when it was first registered in August 04. Mileage was 6K.

not a bad deal then, cant quite stretch to 20k though :( which is a shame because theres some nice ones about but im just gonna keep lookin till i can buy one iv already found a couple of good prices on the C220 aventgarde with low miles on it, Thanks for your input and reveiw on the car its been very helpfull although i hav read a few reveiws on parkers and places like that they only test the car out they dont use it like a proper person would from day to day so it nice to hear what a real person thinks of it rather then someone that just gets paid to drive a car round for the day and writing what they think of it.

Hi Smiddy,

I covered 250 miles today in the car :D Through heavy rain and high winds mostly motorway driving, and the car drove great :D According to the computor I was averaging 63MPH and the car was doing 49.7MPG. The car was perfect road holding and when I had to put the foot down it responded instantly. Very very impressive for a diesel :D

Hi,

Christmas was great, I've got two rugrats Grace 6 and my son Andrew is only 3. So watching them getting ready for Santa is magic

I've parked the car up until Monday at the earlist that way I can get a drink. Hope you enjoy your test drives and have a good New Year.

How did you get such a big discount - is it just your superior negotiating skills :-D
Was the car bought from a MB dealer?
Thanks

I was dealing cash not finance, this is a big help also deal near the end of the month. If they don't sell the car you are looking at, the dealer can find a drop on glasses guide price the next month. Each month the guide price can drop as much as £500-£1000 so keep this in mind when talking.

I bought my car from a main dealer/stealer

Thanks for that, although I understood that cash is not the preferred (by car dealers) option - they would prefer finance as they can make a lot of money on that.
One tip I heard was to do the deal based on finance, but then go in and pay cash when you collect the car. :D Not sure I'm hard-faced enough to do that, though.

When I first started talking money with the salesman, he dropped the price by £700. At that point I stood up and started walking, saying "Don't waste anymore of my time, I'll go to another dealer/stealer that will talk sensible!" He soon started to talk sense, his first offer on my trade was also a joke!!!!!
