Ok, so yesterday started with a visit by the Merc technician. Car failed to start & hand held analyser indicated 9volts only coming out of the battery. So jump start & driven around to dealership. Initial test there threw up a faulty NOx sensor so had to leave it there to be fixed. New battery & sensor replaced under warranty. Additionally, the technician updated the engine management software (done as a goodwill gesture!). This is the second (Exide) battery replacement in 2 years!!it was replaced initially when the auto stop start failed to function after a few months.
Anyway, happy motorist again. For how long ???? Watch this space.

Welcome, I assume your battery was still in warranty? My 9.5 year old E class is still on its original battery, & my wife's SLK battery lasted 9 years. You must be unlucky?

Bertb1 after diagnosis when stop/start failed, test indicated battery fault and new battery cured it but not for long! I reckon that since it senses whether the battery has enough power before shutting down it probably indicates a battery fault!?
Sonic - yes my car is still under warranty and I am hoping that this new battery will last like the battery in my VW Golf (10years). However, I was a little surprised by the statement of the Merc breakdown technician that he has had to replace “lots” of batteries about 12 months old! Only time will tell. What I will say though, if it happens again I will trade in my car for something with a better reliability record.

Mine lasted 14 years, and even then it was 50/50 but the AA man replaced it (covered by their breakdown warranty). However the batteries used in stop/start cars do seem to fail much quicker - have a VW and SEAT in the family and, reading the forums, see lots of reports of early failures, often with people struggling to get replacements in warranty.
