Just wondering if anyone out there could solve my problem or has experienced the same fault.
My c220 1995 is suffering starting problems, the latest time was yesterday when I tried to start it after work, it was a hot day and when I turned the key all that I heard was a click, couldnt start it so returned to my car later that day when the sun had gone down and the car started straight away. my garage had previously solved the problem with a new overload relay but the problem now seems to have returned.:( Any suggestions;)

Turn the headlamps on and if the starter just goes click and the headlamps stay on it could be the starter, if the headlamps go out then battery connection.

Thanks for the quick replies, is there any way I can test the starter motor without replacing it, have tried starting it with lights on and they stay on. Any reason why it wont start in heat?

Just be sure that the click is from the starter motor, that is the solinoid on top and make sure the the large cable is tight

i had a similar problem with my C220, and after some days of troubleshooting eventually the trip counter and other electrical items started to fail also when trying to start,

turned out my battery had a defective cell which is quite ok for a 10 year old battery, so i bought a new one and was amazed at the response from it (problem solved)

any chance you can test with a known good battery ?

Anti-theft

With the C220, if you forget to lock the doors, the anti-theft will disable the starter after a fixed delay. You will then not be able to start the car. To reset the condition, lock the doors using the remote control, and unlock the doors again. This feature puzzled me for years before I figured it out.
