We are all the proud owners of chains, for the best part good in excess of 150k, the nice thing with a chain that you can hear it at idle when it is starting to wear.

Sudden catastrophic failure can happen at an time on any engine, no matter how old or new. But all things being equal, you'll know when it becomes necessary because it will rattle like an old tractor for a while first.

When its worn you gat a rattle from front of engine much more noticable at idle, the tensioner can give the same effect. year's ago on some cars the chain would get streched to the point it slapped against the timming cover, in one car I saw it wore a hole right through the cover Most of our cars use duplex (double) chains sinse mid 85and many earlier cars have been modified.

I have never heard of a chain seizing, worn to the point that it snaps yes

Chains can go on forever, and the rattle is usually induced by the failure of the tensioner to maintain pressure on the chain. The first time it will be noticeable is on the overrun and then applying accelerator. The off/on load causes the chain to flap, which if the tensioner is not quite up to the job will effect a rattle. Replacement of a chain or tensioner is usually an engine out job as both the sump pan and the head have to be taken off to remove the timing cover. On rare occasions the chain can be replaced with the engine in situ but its like key hole surgery - i.e very difficult.

Just to add to Clives and Jbaerks post, the noise is more noticable from a cold start before the oil presure has built up.

On the 112 engines and some others I have not studied, the sprocket on the crankshaft is sprung loaded. When the engine is stopped the sprocket winds back releasing the oil presure from the main journals and retarding the engine to make starting easier, the chain tensioner is held under presure by a one way ball valve in the oil gallery.

when i say seized i mean engine stone dead, and chain snapped

thats what happened to her, and of course if the chain goes it unleashes damage in the process

she goes down under (OZ) for three months every year during winter and the car sits in the rain during that time

i've advised her that she should get a friend to drive it every week but she's stubborn

perhaps if it fails again with the replacement engine, she'll re-consider

cheers
