My 99T C220cdi man. estate sport has completed over 130,000 mls. Are there any major problems on the horizon or should i try and sell. My annual mileage is 25k. Not sure of the value, but think will be difficult to sell more so in 12 months (155k)
Any views please. aplolgies if this thread appears twice.

Damned if you do, Damned if you don't!
The 220CDI if well looked after properly should be good for a long while yet. As its already gone over 100k, the part of the market that is scared of high mileage is out of the frame already, and no dealer will put it on their forecourt, so the car's value has already taken the knock. Then again, a dealer will offer you bottom book anyway - even if it had 30k on it, so at least you've had your money's worth.

My advice would be that the cheapest alternative is to keep it and run it to over 200k - chances are it will be the cheapest 75k you ever cover. However, if you fancy a change, there is never a good time so just bite the bullet and hawk it round.

I've got the same car (except in an auto).

When I bought mine it already had 135k and now, one year later, it has 156k on the clock. It is going really well (touch wood) and I hope to keep it for another few years yet. I keep it well serviced and change the oil and filter every 6k with synthetic oil.

I am hoping that it will be good for another 100k or so after which time I do not expect to get more than a few quid for it. Still cheap motoring though.

Once you've gone over 100k then its not a question of value but of being able to find a buyer. Dropping the value to attrach buyers is a waste of time and can be counter productive as the prostpective buyer thinks the lower value describes a dud and he doen't want to risk big bills. If you want to off load it then do this through a dealer and accept the low value.

I always console myself with the philosophy that Mercs are inherently reliable and that the big bills are no more than the previous depreciation, which probably amounts to £0,000s per year. As you may have little or no finance on the motor then the notional cost can be added to the contingency fund for the big bang! - (I don't know why anybody buys a new car given that advice) - This all adds up to big bucks and its better the car that you know rather than the one you don't.

The last car we had was an 1992 Audi 80, which we had for 11 years and it didn't owe us anything for the last 7 years/70k mls and I cruelly scrapped it out two months ago for £200 (best value ~£700) when a gearbox bearing went. In the last 7 years it cost me on average £150 per year in repairs. I developed a great car to drive and I look back on the economics and feel quite satisfied.

In 1990's did 248K on a 250E, and essentially I ran it into the ground. Apart from servicing and few minor problems, it never gave any major problem.
My advice is simple. If it has been regularily serviced...you have changed oil and filter, it should go on for a few more years. Why buy something which depreciates like mad, when your Merc has already done so, and may prove to be reliable for a couple of years... better the devil you know etc.
