hi all,

it's been a while since i've been on - very busy and things to do:roll:. since purchasing my car about 9months ago i've always thought the consumption poor, 32mpg tank to tank. mercedes said - dpf, wide tyres, driving style basically my fault. i took it to an authorised service centre and they couldn't have been more helpful. the car eventually started booming/resonating at between 100&1500 rpm, fuel consumption went through the floor on the dash and in neutral would not sit at 1000rpm but shot up above this and was lumpy at 950 rpm. plugged into diagnostic and not one fault code:confused:.
it eventually started booming at a time which was convenient to take to garage and they plugged it in whilst it was doing it - no fault code but at least they knew it was doing something. booming was happening at about every 50 miles with subsequent drop in fuel consumption. garage opened a case file and eventually put in an ecu, drove it for 300 miles and it was fine- result:D - no:( , got it back and two miles later it was booming. it went into garage today for a service and i was asked a few questions about extra services-aircon anti bacterial clean etc. and car would receive mobil1. i said don't bother with mobil1 as was not serviced by mercedes last twice so not worth it -another long story:-(. at this the technician came to see me about the oil as he said the car MUST have it as it is a low ash oil. as soon as he had seen the sheet not to use mobile1 he knew the problem. apparently if the dpf'd cars don't get it then the dpf gets clogged and will be continually trying to burn it clean leading to poor fuel consumption and the booming. so if you have a dpf in your car and have used anything but mobile1 the dpf will be getting clogged and £1011 to change - mercedes price. please be warned. sorry about the long post

The crucial thing is that the oil is 229.31 or 229.51 - the .x1 means low ash.

Ordinary Mobil1 is 229.5. Mobil1 ESP (Emission Systems Protection) version is 229.51.

This (dealers using 'ordinary' Mobil1) has come up before and I've seen it suggested that Mercedes dealers have special versions of the oils that do conform to the .x1 spec but personally I'm somewhat dubious about that.

As you know Rory oils are becoming very special to individual engines and makes as the additives are a crucial part of the way the engine performs

There is a new ford engine where you can only use the one oil for it, what a long way from when you just put any oil in

Low ash oil is available over the conunter at
MB parts dept's. It comes in 1L bottles and is about £12.

I realise it's available but there have been other threads where dealers have admitted using non-LA oil. And also some dealers have claimed that the version of the apparently non-LA oils that they supply is a special version made for Mercedes that does in fact comply.
