I am writing here in absolute desperation, given I have spent thousands trying to sort out a recurring issue with my car's transmission. I have a MB C220D on a 2016 plate that I bought used in 2018 with 61000 miles on the clock. For the first year the car ran pretty well and the later problems may well have been there but were not noticeable for sure.
In 2020 I started to experience a slight judder after almost every gear change. Ove the next few months that slight judder got considerably worse and at one point the selection of reverse became very hit and miss.
To get it checked out initially I went to a local specialist who advised the only people who could fully diagnose this issue would be MB main dealer in Norwich.
I took the car there, explained the issues and they had the car for about a week. In that time they did a fluid and filter change and apparently removed the valve body with a final recommendation that the car needed a new Torque Converter. The chap on the desk tipped me the wink that MB send all their cars with transmission issues to an auto box specialist, and that by going direct, I'd save a lot of money. So the car went in and the TC was exchanged for about 1000 pounds. I had previously paid about 600 to the local main dealer for what they did and the investigative work.
So I got the car with a new torque converter and it was much improved; however, within a few months it was doing the same thing again, and my only recourse then was to have MB main dealer look at the car again. It sounds crazy but I got nothing conclusive from them after two weeks, except that they were unable to code the box correctly for the relearning, but the general consensus was that I should change the whole gearbox!! Another 800 quid was paid to MB Norwich for this BTW.
So I went to another local MB specialist who reckoned he could find a good 2nd hand GB and that he could take the electronics from my car and swap out with the new box, as apparently all the transmissions are linked to the individual cars. He did this and a couple of other things and for about 1200 quid I had a replacement gearbox and the car was running sweet again.
That was about 6 months ago, and in that time I did not drive the car too much, but maybe 4 weeks back I was driving home from Heathrow with a colleague and we both noticed the judder was back. I had to drive the car through Europe last week on business and the damned thing is just getting worse, to the extent that now if travelling at speed on the flat and need to increase revs to climb a hill, the juddering is there the whole time until the road flattens out again.
To me it seems to look obvious that there is a fault on the car that is causing the transmission issues, but I am lost as to what that fault could be, but I do not want to go back to the main stealer again.
Is there something else that I need to point these people at? Having spent more than 3 grand on this fault now, I am loath to take any more advice from Main Dealer, and am just hoping someone may have some ideas on here, or if possible have seen the fault (and the cure) sometime before.
I like the car a great deal, it does all I want it to, and is very comfortable on a long journey, but now at 82000 miles I would like to trade in for newer but obviously need to cure this fault first or pretty much give the car away.
I am pretty desperate now, and any help or advice that this forum may have will be very gratefully received. I just can't afford to throw away a car that's worth the best part of 12 grand, but until it's sorted I also can't drive it now with any confidence.
Thanks for reading my long-winded cry for help, it's appreciated.
