Hi. I own a C-Class C220d (W205) made in 2016 and face a fairly awkward problem with the adblue system.

The following pattern is observed time after time (bear in mind that I drive approx 200km per day to/from work):

1. Car has no issue.
2. Once the adblue level goes below the minimum threshold (warning message comes on when approx 1700km remain) I refill the adblue tank back to 4400km (full tank).
3. The system works fine for 1-2days with the adblue level reducing normally as the car is driven around I.e. reduces to 4300km and so on.
4. After a couple of days the "check engine" light comes on and I get the "cannot measure the adblue level" warning message. At this time indeed the level of the adblue is not shown.
5. As I keep driving the car I also get the warning that "the car will not start in 800km" and the backward counting begins.
6. At a point approx 60km after the countdown begins, the message disappears (I.e. no countdown) but the check engine light is still on.
7. As I keep driving the car, the process with the countdown is repeated one more time with the check engine light still on.
8. Once the warning message clears (i.e. after the second cycle), the check engine light also disappears a couple of days later.
9. From this point the car is fine with no adblue problems, engine lights or warning messages ...until I need to refill adblue again. At this time the whole cycle starts again.

I was thinking that the adblue tank and associated adblue level measuring mechanism may be faulty but if this was the case, why does it work smoothly after the second "warning cycle" (described above) and until the adblue is refilled again? Also it works fine for the first couple of days after each refill.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Are you adding anti crystal formula to the ad blue ??

what happens if you keep it topped up? does it still throw error messages - i mean after the second cycle, then top it up every say 2000km - would that keep it away for good?

Yes, the error comes every time I top up the adblue tank irrespective of the adblue level that existed before the refill.

I have tried topping up when the adblue level was at 75% but got the error a couple of days later.

Afaik there's 2 bar sensors for full and low . It's best to keep both wet to help prevent crystals building up on them. Adding anti crystal now may help to irradicate them . ( May !!! ) .

Suggest drain and refill with new ad blue and add a 500 ml bottle of anti crystal.
