Greetings! I am new to the forum and own two MB's - one 1991 190D 2.5 diesel (177 000 km), and a 1995 C220D (202 000 km). Both were imported from Germany. I live in Portugal.
My problem is that the C220D, when starting cold in the morning usually "misfires" (I believe this is the correct expression - for technical auto words are a translation nightmare...).
An accelerated engine stroke when starting the car is common in both models - and it softens after a few minutes (this is pretty evident in the 190D), but the kind of noise coming from the engine isn't the common cold engine stroke - it is rather more shaky... Sometimes the car misfires and I have to re-start it.
This has been happening for the last 6 months - I started to believe the culprit might be the infamous Lucas diesel pump, but I'm afraid to spend 1000 EUR and still have the same problem. One curious thing the mechanic where I service both cars (non-official - but specialized in MB's...) told me is to see if that problem occurs when the fuel tank is bellow half - and indeed it does happen more often when it is.... I have also tried filling the tank with higher quality diesel (commonly recommended for common rail diesel engines) and it seemed to help a bit - but is this because the tank is full, or because the diesel helped?
Any thoughts?
