Hi all,
I bought my c230 kompressor sport auto, 1997, back in August and love the car :p

The only down side is the fuel consumption....ouch.....£10 gets me about 45 miles !!!

I have changed the oil/filter,plugs,air filter but am wondering do I need to get it tuned (could it be running rich) or do something to improve the fuel economy ?
I drive sensibly and I do not thrash it but looking at the forum some people are getting around 30 miles to the gallon !!!

All help greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

Ian

Hi,
Just for some sort of comparison for you, I have a "P" plate reg. 1997 (1996 build) C230K Sport but mine is a five speed manual, I fill the tank up, and get 380+ miles to a tank, start by checking/cleaning/replacing the MAF and as the previous poster says, I found mine to be aprrox 10-12% more fuel efficient with a K&N filter fitted in the standard air box, with a new standard filter I struggled to get 330 miles to a tank. The use of these filters is "supposed" to destroy the MAF because of ther oil that the K&N is impregnated with, but my K&N has been fitted now for 70,000+miles, though the MAF failled within 1500 miles of fitting the filter, the MAF I replaced it with has be 100% ever since (and it was an E-bay one )

So it works out that your getting about 20ish to the gallon, are you doing town driving and booting it at every opportunity?? I got a standard c230k with 6 speed manual, round town I get poor mpg due to my heavy right foot but on a run im averaging 32

Hi,
IIRC correctly our age C230's, consumption should be 31-32mpg for the manual transmission and 28-29mpg for the Auto.

All,
Thank you for your replies :)
380 miles to the tank ! Excellent. The two occasions I filled my tank I just about managed 300 miles. To be fair more driving about the town rather than motorway driving but I do drive very carefully and never floor it (so much power you don't need to :))
Forgive my ignorance but what exactly is the MAF, is it the Mass Air Flow sensor and if so where do I find it and how do I clean it ?
Also I have been thinking about a k&n filter for some time, might give it a go !
Thank you in advance for your replies :)
Regards
Ian

So you're getting about 21mpg then? I'd kill for that! I don't see that on a flat motorway at 56 mph.

45mpg from 2 gallons is quiet normal around town. I have same engine as you and have tested this many times and I always struggle to get any more than 24mpg around town but on a stable motorway run, i am able to acheive around 40mpg almost every time. Along with MAF i would also check the tyre pressure as it can reduce your consumption by 1-2% which always make a difference. I have tested this on motorway, I use to get maximum 38/39mpg max on motorway run but since i inflated my tyres properly, its increased by 2 - 3 mpg.

Andy,

Do you have panel filter from K&N? doesn't it cause problem with MAF for the filter oil?

MAF is MAss air flow and issue with MAF can have an impact on your performance as well as consumption.

On the other hand those figures don't sound too bad to be honest if you do most of the driving around town. I have same engine as you in a CLK and get around 280- 300 miles from full tank with very careful around town driving. On motorway or mixture driving you can easily achieve 400+ figures
