I have a C250TD with a worrying drink problem, its a 97 saloon 5 speed auto with 130k miles and its been bad since I bought it 3 months ago. I have just refilled after 280 miles and it took £40 of diesel, this works out at 27mpg, this is not right, the 280 miles were a mixture of motorway and town driving, any ideas welcome, cheers Steve.

I am not sure if I can help, but I have the exact model of car you have. Mine is a 96 with 125K (5 speed auto). I get 40 mpg or 500 ish miles on a tank, but it is mostly motorway and I am very easy on it.

Round town it is much worse, but I cant say how bad as I dont drive round town much, but I dont think 27mpg for this car is that bad round town.

Sorry I dont have any other ideas, hope this helps.

I've just taken mine over 200k miles and I'm getting no worse than 38 and I've seen 45 mpg. I'm very happy with that as the BMW Compact TeDiouS I had previously struggled to achieve 43 and I'm in a car that's quicker, larger, more comfortable and an automatic. My journeys are 50% motorway, 50% cross country.

I had that problem initally with the BMW I mentioned. Even when driving like a granny (because the consumption was so dire) it only achieved 33 mpg. Took it to the dealer who plugged it into the diagnostic module and proclaimed nothing was wrong.

I looked at the air filter and it was sooty. So I changed air and fuel filters and although the consumption wasn't as good as I expected, it was at least 10 mpg better than before.

Taxi independent looked at it today. Admit it was cause I thought the ride hard - its a sport model, he said everything ok. Must be me and my soft arse.
Asked him about fuel he said 33mpg combined about right on the 250 TD
