Hi folks, first post.

I went to look at a 1999 C250 turbo diesel today with a view to buying it, and I'm looking for a bit of advice from someone who is familiar with this model and in particular the engine.

The car was advertised with 106,000 miles, 1 owner, my first surprise was the extent of the noise from the engine when cold, it sounded like a 40 year old Massey Fergusson with lots of knocking for the first couple of minutes, sounded like piston slap as opposed to big end kind of knocking, there was a little bit of blue smoke which cleared after a few seconds.

Is this normal for this engine?

Once warm the engine had quietened down.

The second thing that surprised me was the complete lack of power, I wasn't expecting it to be fast but I would estimate it took around 10 seconds to accelerate from 30 - 40 mph, theres obviously something not right, any ideas what it could be?

The cars being sold by a non franchised garage, the guy is going to get it to a mechanic and I'm going to go back and see it again when they've fixed the problem.

The cars fitted with an auto gearbox, are they reliable?

The cars service history stopped at 60,000 miles in 2004 which makes me wary, I would have thought that if the car was being maintained by the owner he would have at least kept the receipts for service parts.

That said the interior is in very good nick as is the body, neither suggest that the car has been clocked, in fact it was the general great condition of the car for it's age and mileage which attracted me to it in the first place.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No.

If you sort out your other concerns with the car, re gearbox servicing, etc, then if the garage claim to have fixed the fault, insist upon witnessing / hearing it start from cold first thing in the morning. Make sure they don't cheat by giving the glow plugs multiple cycles or them filling the fuel filter with injector cleaner.

i had a manual c250td which had about 120k on the clock. ive also driven a few auto ones. theyre usually quiet as you would expect a merc diesel to be and, depending what your comparing it against, they usually go like stink! i put mine up against my dads w203 c220cdi an the difference in performance came from the lack of turbo lag with the cdi. once my 250 was running on boost, there was nothing to tell them apart! so id agree that theres definately something amiss!

Thanks guys, yes theres definetely something wrong with this one, and the knocking from the engine is quite concearning when it's cold, it sounded like an old transit.

I am running that year/model. Performance is perky and startup a little rattley but soon quietens down, certainly much quieter than my previous pug 306. I would stear clear to be honest. There seems to be plenty of choice about.

Thanks, I used to own a Peugeot 309 diesel which was much quieter than this merc on cold startup, think I will give it a miss, I suspect that the lack of service stamps for the last 40,000 miles means it hasnt been serviced at all and the ancient engine oil has caused the engine to wear.

Think I'll give this one a miss.

Good idea. Mines got 141k and it's a quite engine although and doesn't take 10 sec from 30 to 40.

I owned a P reg (1996) C250TD for 7 years. I sold it with 150,000 on the clock. It ran as quiet as a mouse and went like stink.

I would walk away from the one you've described, without even looking back.
