With mine, if I sit with it in W (for Wimp) and switch it to S (Sport) you can feel it changing into 1st gear as in Wimp it pulls away in 2nd.

That's how it was explained to me anyway. ;)

With the engine running and the gearbox in Park, when you switch from Winter to Standard you should 'feel' the box change from 2nd to 1st.

Not sure about that, don't think that you can feel it it. With S or W, 1st or 2nd is the gear that it starts in, once the car is moving off in the selected W or S changing it will do nothing as it only works from standstill in mine.

I can definitely 'feel' the box changing from 2nd to 1st with the switch.

I found the difference in pulling away very noticeable. When I forgot once that I'd left it in W I was ready to take it in for service before I realised it was in W.

S and W

have a w210 e320 cdi.

understanding the 1st and second gear gist for summer and winter, but is there any advantage/disadvantage in leaving it in W permanently.

I was coming at this from an economy and wear/tear perspective - not bothered about performance. Or is it more economical in s. I find it tends to snatch a little in S on pulling away.

From reading different threads on this forum will still use the S and W switch every now and then to stop it sticking though.

This is all down to the power of the engine, the 320CDI has a lot of torque at low revs so should be fine in W. My SL500 spins the wheels very easily in S.
If you want to race away at the lights, then keep it in S.
It should be more economical in W

W V's S

"Winter" it is then. Not interested in racing from the lights and certainly not interested in scrubbing tyres unneccesarily.

Out of interest I will do a tank on W and a tank on S to establish the mpg difference as I am getting conflivcting views on what is most economical. the vast majority share your view Malcolm, but some are saying the 1st gear uses lower rev's and consequently fuel on standing start.

I drive 30 miles into London each day so will be an interesting test in view of lots of stop start.

Will post the feedback in a few weeks for those who are interested.
