Hello:

I have a C280 1994 and I get Severe Vibrations in the steering at 65mph
or above. I jacked up the car and check the wheels for play in the
bearings and there is some play in both front wheels. The passenger
side front wheel has more play than the driver side front. A while
ago, I had changed all the balljts and lower control arm bushings.
So, I know that all that is good.

My question is, Is there any way I can tighten the bearings on
a C280 1994? If I can, how do I do that? Do I just remove the
hub cap and tighten them? Haven't worked on this before.

If someone can give a step by step instructions, that will be
appreciated.

Thanks a lot,
Arvind.

Normall the wheels need balancing to stop the viabration.

to adjust the wheel bearings, remove the cap and tighten the nut until the wheel starts to go tight, then back off at least hafl a turn so that you can turn the wheel without feeling the balls when you turn the wheel.

 When I got my 500 SEL last year I got my wheels balanced as a matter of course. As time and the miles went on I started getting a really bad steering wheel shake at 50MPH plus. I new it couldn't be the balancing because I had only recently had the wheels done.I took the car round several garages and no-one could diagnose the fault:confused: .....I had visions of the whole of the front end of the car being dismantled to cure the problem:?: My last attempt before major surgery to the car was to try fitting new tyres,I called in at my local tyre depot and explained the situation.
They put the car on the ramp and one of the tyre fitters noticed that I had no balancing weights on the wheels?????.......you have guessed it:rolleyes: The idiot who balanced my wheels originally hadn't stuck them on right and they had spun off!!!!!!!.......My wheels were balanced again and the car is now perfect:D :D no wobbles!!

I gave the fitter a few quid for a drink!

Sorry Malcolm, but I would have to disagree very slightly with your answer in so far as backing the nut of by half a turn. I am sure you meant "back off one flat of the nut" didn't you?;)

Thank you so much to all of you. Do I need to remove the brake
caliper and the rotor to get to the hub cap? I think the hub cap
comes out from hole in the rotor center, right? I don't remember
exactly.

Thank again,
Arvind

this is a re post

to adjust the wheel bearings, remove the cap, then the spring, slacken the nut holding the clamp and tighten till the hub is tight to turn, then back off till the hub can be turned, the max free play is 0.01mm to 0.02mm. tighten the nut on the clamp re pack cap with bearing grease and re fit.
