BMW may have changed the engine (and from the data you provided it seems to offer similar power, torque, etc) - however they are not changing the inside of the car.... I used to own a 5Series (the previous version) and when I was looking for a new car one of the main items that convinced me to choose a MB was the interior - it's better than the old 5 series (style, quality, look, etc) and a LOT better than the new 5 series BMW. I think BMW have lost the plot with their new design... I notice that they have even taken it over to their 3 series... my view is that MB and Audi have the best designed cars...

Do you think this is a widely held view? How come BMW sales overtook Merc sales for the first time in history in 2004?

The BMW Mini probably. Both MB & BM sales are really rising at enornmous rates for the past few decades.

I doubt it. In Germany the present 7 series outsells the S class. Present 7 series, in three years, has already outsold what the previous 7 series managed to do in its entire lifespan.

BMW are going to fit the 3.0 twin turbo from the 535d into the 3-series. Sounds great in theory (did you see Top Gear on 31/7/05 where JC drove the 535?), apart from.

1. Run-flat tyres - I will refuse to drive a car that has these fitted. (Compromised ride, major problem if you have more than 50 miles left on your journey when you have a puncture).
2. The new 3-series looks undertyred on anything less than 18", especially at the rear. But 18" tyres have poor ride.
3. Dashboard design is horrid.
4. External body shape isn't much better.
5. And as for the 'image'... Not that it bothers me, but some people actually have a prejudiced view of BMW drivers which us Merc drivers don't have to suffer.

But lower power in the 3? Or have you heard differently?

Heard the ride on one make was excellent - Pirelli I think - was from auto Express I think.

Having driven the E90 (the new 3 series), I can confirm the ride is superior to the E46 (the previous one). They have definitely sorted the run flat tyre issues. It is sporty firm ride, far superior to any of the Audi 'sport' rides.

Yes - its been roadtested in the UK since about February. I ordered mine at the end of June and it arrives mid-sept (I hope)

Its on the web, in the price list but as far as I know its not in the brochure yet.

What do you think of the C320 CDI Sport ..?
I currently have '97 C280 sport from new ( 9 years old and 159K miles)
It's been brilliant! Now I'm contemplating either C320CDI (sport)or new BMW 335D Coupe ( just released last week)
Keen to hear your thoughts.

I would say from around 2004/5 is when BMW introduced the heavily revised 3 series, which tempted a lot of Ford/Vauxhall sales reps into BMW's because of their low tax liability.

Its also widely reported, BM's are "supposed" to be more of a drivers car.

I've recently just bought a C320CDI, and for me, the comparison is not really a like for like contest. BMW may be more of a "drivers" car, and better economy, but when was the last time you sat in one ?, its a car, nothing more. DULL.
Comparing a similar Merc you straight away sense its a different class, you are going on a journey, not a drive, if you know what I mean.
And I would like anyone to tell me the 320CDI is not a fun car, or drivers car.http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

There are more chavs than non-chavs?
The 3 series is more common than a Mondeo.
