c36 exhaust leaking...! - Front pipe to first box (of 2 para

Can the stainless front box be welded?  Is that a catalyst or just silencer?  Or do I need new parts??

The 'blow' is the front seam, the weld has split around the circumference at the leading edge of the box.  Should I get a good welder to fix, or will I damage something inside beyond economical use?
