hi all,
First time on the forum, but after some advice if possible.
I bought a 2017 C63 with a water damaged engine.
After a compression test cylinders 4 and 8 were low on compression, but the engine did run.
I decided to pulled the engine and box out and stripped the engine to find two bent con rods on 4 and 8 and piston rings in the sump.
After looking for a low milage engine for quite a while I found a 2017 ML63S engine and box with 15K miles on it.
Obviously not quite the same but my guess was the block etc would be the same.
Got both engines on stands and started the swap over, sump, oil pick up, engine mounts etc and lots of pipes.
Eventually got it all back together and back in the car.
A little bit of messing about getting it started and running but now all up and running as a daily driver.
My question is as follows, my original sump that I had to use has a oil temp sensor on the filter housing, but the new loom off the ML63S does not have a plug to connect to it. I have my original loom, can an auto electrician connect in my original sensor to the new loom ?
Also as there is no dip stick on the engine and I cannot find an electronic dip stick, how are you meant to check the oil?
Any assistance or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Tim.

You did this with no error or warning messages?

The car started and drove but obviously did have error messages. My local garage scanned the entire car and reset them all.

The next question on the error messages would be - how many miles, or how many startups, have you driven since the messages were deleted?
Just wondering if you've used the car sufficiently since for them to return if they're going to.
I know this doesn't answer your oil temperature sensor question, but it is still relevant.
Nice work for doing the engine swap.

Ok, so I have used the car daily for the last week travelling to and from work. Thats 70 miles per day with about half that being on the motorway.
The car has not given any error messages.
Each day the car is stopped and started approx 6 to 8 times.

Why not simply use the original loom?

I suspect you are talking about m177 here. I think your replacement came from a 2017 GLC63s, because the ML/GLE still came with 5.5 biturbo at that age point. The GLC63s indeed has no dipstick. The oil level is measured on the dash on that car. Could you not have fitted the dipstick from your broken engine? I’m guessing it may not have been drilled in the appropriate place to accept it?

Uncle Benz, great call. I missed changing over the dip stick as there was not one on my GLC63S engine. However there is a blanking plate on the engine where it would go, so even though it looks a little tricky I should be able to remove the blanking plate and fit the dip stick.
Many thanks.
Just need to get the oil temp reading sorted now. In reply to a previous post, yes I do have the old loom but it is a big job to change it over from engine to engine which I did not want to get into. Replacing the C63 for a GLC63S seemed a big enough job to take on

I would ring out the wiring on your old loom from the oil temp sensor plug to the ecu multiplug or car side of the loom. Once you have identified where it goes you should be able to run new wires without swapping entire loom

There are two wires to the plug, one orange one black. The orange wire joins a number of other orange wires within the loom, power i guess. The black wire goes to ecu plug on the engine just in front of the alternator. I know this as I have separated my original loom to chase the wires, however I'm not confident enough to break into the loom on the engine I now have in the car, and wondered if there was an easier way of doing it, or if there was someone I could take it to.
It does not stop me using the car, however I have noticed that the car will not rev past 5000 revs, and I assume that this is because the ecu will want to know that the oil is up to temp, a kind of engine fail safe i guess. I have read in the manual that in order to a race start the oil temp needs to be hot enough otherwise it will not allow the car to do the race start.
