C63 S204 misfire / eml

Hi, our 2010 c63 has developed a misfire on one bank. My obd reader has given me 5 fault codes. I've done an oil change (Mobil 1), swapped coil packs over bank to bank. When running the obd reader says its misfiring on 5,6,7 and 8. Anyone got any ideas?

As above, camshaft sensor fault.
I would also get cam timing checked. None of those codes say the sensor is faulty or has an implausible value, they all say the value is incorrect and specifically over advanced which would suggest the variable cam timing mechanism is faulty or the chain has jumped (though I would expect the timing to be retarded if it had jumped).

Yes I would have e thought that too. Its ot been driven too hard and was running fine. The next morning it was running like a sack of sh*t. We had it serviced by a local independent merc specialist who used Petronas oil but don't know what spec., that's why I changed it again.

M156 won’t have jumped the chain. Cam adjusters can be troublesome, as can the actuator solenoids and the oil rings. With misfires all on one bank it may be worth checking for a blocked catalyst first though

That wouldn't explain the cam timing errors though?

You mean blocked cats? The cam adjusters and the solenoids can cause cam timing errors, certainly. There are three oil control rings on the phaser sleeves that go into, and seal the oil passages within, the solenoid units. They can break or wear, leading to cam timing errors.
I’ve seen these engines with timing errors stored but engines running well, so I wouldn’t immediately leap on the cam timing as being the problem. It isn’t a small job on these to even just check the cam timing. It’s quick and easy to check exhaust back pressure though - just the lambda to remove. It’d be my first port of call anyway

Thanks Uncle, I'll pull the lambda probe out too. I did notice that there didn't seem to be as much back pressure at the left tailpipes but put it down to the lack of combustion on that bank

Excellent though it does beg the question of why did it go out of time?

Not really, just a bit awkward with the limited space available. Just a case of making sure the crank pulley is set to 40° atdc on #1.
The crank locking tool was a good investment.

I'll probably invest in some new oil control rings on the adjusters, the exhaust cam ones looked a bit worn

I can't think of any way that would do it.

It's a mystery to me too. The exhaust cam seemed slightly out in relation to the inlet, but it's still running fine (touch wood)
