As readers of my other posts will know I have a 1990 300SL with the 103 engine. I note reading the service schedule that I can't find any reference to changing the timing belt. Excuse my ignorance but does it have one, or a chain that needs changing, and if so when?
Many thanks all.

Many thanks.
Does the chain need changing at any particular time?

Hello, your chain is normally good for excess of 150k and beyond.

Please dont change the chain or we may end up with another timing chain saga. But out of interest, why do you think it needs changing? or perhaps its because you first thought it was a belt:eek:

The chain tensioner and guide rails are usually replaced around 90k miles - usually done with the leaking timing cover that the engine suffes from .

I can understand your thinking, but if you decide to do the job yourself, read some of the other timing chain tensioner problems on this forum first. Or you could end up with one seriously damaged engine. Good luck - eric:)

This would certainly take care of too much slack, and put the tensioner back to the mid rangs setting.

What is the best way stats to seal the cover with the head, any idea's.

Many thanks to all, what a helpful bunch. I shan't tackle anything like this myself. The car has been 111,000 and sounds fabulous. It's just had a full service at which I assume the timing gear should have been examined. my initial worry was that it was a beltand that I should be getting ready for a big bill. However, you have commented on my other concern which you suspect might be the chain tensioner. I'll let you know what transpires.
Thanks again.

Hi Socrates. I have been reading your posts with interest as I am looking at a 300SL R129 also.

I am in London also - any chance that you would be willing to impart any comments/opinions on the 300SL as I am very keen to know from an owners perspective what I should be looking for etc.

Many thanks, James
