I have been told my camshaft adjuster has gone because a noise has been coming from the engine. A technician has unplugged the lead going to it so the noise is no longer there. He said that it will not cause any damage but I will lose a little power.

I forgot to ask him how much power and is it something that I need to get fixed straight away or can I leave it for a while?

Leave it connected, is the noise at about 2-3000 rpm, if so just the usual rattle from it.

Yes the noise does seem to be in the early RPMs. So you are saying to leave connected and put up with the noise? What benefit do I get from having it connected?

I believe if it rattles it is faulty, i have a c230k and it has no rattle. You will lose a little power at the higher rpm without it, variable valve timing i effect gives two different stages of tune by altering the timing of the inlet camshaft. this allows you to have good power and driveability at low rpm along with good performance at higher rpm. Merc use this to give a good spread of power, honda use it to give screaming bhp at 9000rpm fro little engines while still retaining good low down power. I'd get it fixed

yes it is faulty/worn, but it will do no harm if left. i think the part is approx £300+vat + fitting. In an ideal world you would have no rattles but we live with some givin the cost of repair??

What car is it ? as 4 hours seems a lot.

Give car body + year, plus engine size + diesel or petrol etc etc.

At a guess, its a C class with a 111 engine fitted, gotta remove rocker cover, front upper chain cover, timing chain tensioner, and then replace adjuster bolted to cam and rebuild.

I have a 2000 C230 with I believe a 111 engine also. Makes that same noise. I have unplugged the camshaft adjuster magner connector and the noise goes away. Can I leave this unplugged?

Does this apply to a 611 engine in a C class W203?
