Firstly, it's illegal to work of hfc and cfc refrigerants without certification.

Also, you need to evacuate the system and pull a vacuum before adding the correct amount of gas in (and oil) in.

You will up with a mix of refrigerant and air/moisture which will corrode and freeze thaw in the system, eventually causing it to stop working again.

Why not take it to halfords etc, ask them to remove the ac gas. Go home and change the sensor then back again for a gas.

Anything to do with refrigeration is Illegal without an F gas certificate which one has to go to an air conditioning class for a year to get qualified, and pass the F gas test.

Modern bollocks. I have guages and gas cans. We have been doing this 4 30 Yr in Africa also comes with small pot of oil to add. Prob 90% success rate where there is no structural leaks . Often have to change filters.

Really?

So all the techs at the dealer, ATS, Kwik Fit and the little garages have had to do a year of training? A day I could believe.

I'm not a legal boffin, but for my two penneth. To work with F gas you need a certificate many are saying. Right stop there. My understanding is the word 'work' 'Work' is to do something for 'profit or gain'. If you do it for yourself, you are not at work. You can juggle running chainsaws at home if you like, but to do it 'at work', your 'Health and Safety' bod might have a word or two to say. Now what about the guy fixing his air conditioning. Well as I see it he can, but I bet there's a law somewhere that says 'he must not let the gas into the atmosphere'. I stand to be corrected.

You are missing the fact that you have to recover the gas before you do any work and to do that you need the correct equipment and be properly qualified. Once it is empty you can work on the system and you can be as dangerous as you like doing that - dodgy jacks, no eye protection etc. Then get it refilled by an AC specialist once the work is complete. The issues is that they are not allowed to refill the system unless there are no leaks so they have to comfortable that the work was properly carried out and there will be no leaks. It is the handling of the gas that requires the appropriate certification not doing any repairs to the system.
