Can you fit a sports or stainless steel exhaust to a modern diesel car?

Can anyone tell me, is it wise to fit a stainless steel system to my 2000 E320 CDI? The rear box will need to be replaced in the next couple of months, I've even toyed with the idea of fitting a rear box from the likes of Remus or Supersprint.. Just wondering if it will have an adverse or positive effect on performance or mpg?

Your advice would be much appreciated :)

I usually find that even on a petrol car it makes little difference just to replace the back box - but I've never known even a full system to make a massive difference to performance on a diesel, certainly no difference in MPG.

Hmmm, isn't the Mercedes exhaust stainless steel anyway?

Not stainless on my 2000 E320CDI, had to have the bracket welded back to the back box back in the summer. Very thick mild steel.

hmmm

Well, was kind of after the sporty look you get from fitting a Remus back box exhaust... something classy like the style they fitted on the old C36's...
some people state that it wouldnt be wise to fit such an exhaust to my E320 CDI as it would effect its performance and mpg...
Was hoping someone on here who is more technically savvy than myself may have the answer:roll:

I've bought my second ever mercedes yestersay too, an Amazon Green E300 TurboDiesel, with 65k and one elderly owner from new.. these cars are grrreat.. I'm hooked!

Thanks guys..

I have and still do fit a stainless steel exhaust to my petrol cars past and present (I tend to keep the vehicles a long time) but am not yet convinced about doing so with a diesel. My E320CDi is still on its original exhaust and as this is the first diesel car I have owned have not arrived at the replacement dilemma just yet.

My main concerns are that the system will be noisier and the steel less tensile and possibly more prone to cracking. I too would be very interested to get feedback from anyone who has experience on this issue.
