I assume you don't still have this jack, if so take the seals to a local seal supplier, they will match them.

NEVER trust hydraulics - 1959 as a craft apprentice I was on the afternoon shift carrying out maintenance on a power loader and was sent off the face to make up a new 1.5 inch diameter return hose for the cutter head lifting rams. Whilst I was off the face the craftsman crawled under the cutter jib, all 7 tons of it, and started to remove the cover plates when the leaking hose burst releasing the h/oil from the rams allowing the 7 ton cutter head to drop down - he was never to see his family again.

When working under a car it is also wise to chock the wheels even when on axle stands - takes no time at all.

Very true,,I have my car on stands right now, I point the odd foot towards the front as they can tip with the P brake off and in N unless the ground is dead level, just the effect of undoing a wheel nut on the opposite side could roll the car off

Well I was going to paint it and make it look nice ;):D

I've often thought I should give my old trolley jack a paint, but I'm sure if I did it would start leaking

Just wash it down and spray the thing with any old left over paint

I couldn't do that Malcolm, I would need to have the paint matched up to the original colour and a full restoration done ;)

we don't need to go into the "benz bin", we can mix it with engineering, sort of lightening up the subject, it's a bit like the bbc news, they just showed 20,000 dying in the floods in pakistan, then the next item was a man who had the worlds largest collection of chrisp packets!. if stargazer is like her picture then we need to have more member's meetings. herbiemercman.

i have just had two 1.5 ton trolley jacks supporting the front of my car, one under each side whilst i am changing the autobox oil cooler pipes on my e-300 est. car..

both jacks are the diy types, i think "nu-tool" is one of them, it is 2 yrs old and working fine. the other is a similar make and i have had it 20 yrs, this one today started to slowly lower itself, with oil seeping passed the oil seal on the pump shaft. gave me quite a scare.!

because i was using two jacks i felt safe, but i am now questioning this? and i am buying two axle stands tomorrow.

i have seen many mechanics relying on just the one jack and a local mechanic was crushed to death some years back here in bamber bridge, pear tree garage, where a 10 ton tower jack hydraulics failed and he was stuck under a coach. familarity breeds contempt. i am posting this as many out there may have got complacent as i had. herbiemercman.

Hi could be an easy fix for that jack

Probably a ball bearing in one of bores/holes in the jack housing that isn't seating properly you need to make that seating better maybe tapping the ball with a flat end punch

This is my trolley jack, it cost me £3 some ten years ago, the nice thing about it is it is so low and will go under any car with ease
