Car stopped going forward

Guys and gals, need some help !!

Tonight my C250 turbo diesel 1998 model year was traveling down the road.
I pushed the accelerator, and the motor did nothing.
The car started to slow down. I pulled over and stopped the car. I then began to accelerate and the car accelerated as normal. It then began to not respond, like I pushed the clutch in, and no acceleration.

The motor did not accelerate.

The water temperature went to 120C.

Then the car began to run normally and the water temp started to drop like a rock. The engine heat, from the heating system, was not excessive.

Could this be:
- a bad sensor
- an ECU or TCU (car has auto trans)

Car has 122 K miles, and needs new glow plugs.

Any ideas before I take it to Mercedes? Anyone know of a good independent specialist on the west side of Birmingham?

Best

It must be the MAF, its the only variable thing on the engine, and that's the way that they respond, very much so with diesels.

Someone will point you in the right direction of where to go in the morning, with luck.

Guys,

Thanks. On the motorway, the car had no acceleration over 70 mph. Is this also an MAF issue? Car feels like an old fashioned diesel.

Changed the fuel filters, got better acceleration, but the higher speed acceleration does not exist.

Thanks

Normally yes,the performance can drop off one start, and be better or worse the next.
