On a pre-92 car is it possible to replace the catalytic converter with a straight through pipe or silencer with a fitting for the lamda probe? and is it worth it? i.e. is the slight loss of performance and economy with cat equiped cars down to the cat, or the engine management system managing the engine for the cat?
If anyone has done this, where did you aquire your replacement pipe?

Cat replacement

I have heard, although i may be totally wrong, but if a car was factory fitted with a cat, and it has been subsequently removed, when it is taken for its MOT it will fail on this.....as i say i may be wrong, but its probably worth checking out before you go replacing anything!

cheers

Cat replacement

I enquired about this when the Media was frightening everyone with the failure rate/cost of cats.
A professional tuning firm was recommended, with a re chip & I understand , a sensor in the exhaust had to be moved. The BHP gain was not cost/efficient for my taste.

I believe on a pre '92 car you can do what you want.
The performance loss is indeed due to the engine overfuelling to feed the cat. The cat capacity is greater than the engine will output.
You need to have the system fooled / retuned to reduce the mixture strength.
