was wondering:
in the E-class w210, did they ever offer the 200cdi or only the 220cdi?
and doe anybody know what the difference is between the 2? cause i believe the engine are the same, but the 220cdi has an intercooler? where would this be fitted?
thx, rgds RP

They are all listed on the attached Russian site http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1. I do not think they sold the W210 as a 200CDI in the UK.
I think you may be correct on the 143Bhp but I would have to check my paperwork for definite. (Sat outside by the bbq at the moment:D)

Your ok, BBQ finished (hic). No 200cdi, and the 220cdi = 143hp @ 4,200 rpm and 315Nm torque from 1,800-2,600. The 320cdi = 195hp @ 4,200 rpm and 470Nm torque from 1,800-2,600.
IMHO the 220 is good for fuel economy although feels a little flat. Although that could be because I have the 320. I did once see a 270cdi in W210 form for sale however that was a special order so don't think many were made in RHD.

Pre facelift W210 E220Cdi's were fitted with a 125bhp engine. It was at the facelift in September 1999 when the power was upped to 148bhp. I believe that it is this earlier version of the engine that was fitted to the 200Cdi family.

I understand that for the latest facelift of the W211 E220cdi the power has been increased further to 170bhp.

I think you have found an extra 5hp somewhere;).

The 270cdi was 170bhp - now replaced with the 190bhp 280cdi and the 220 was, and still is, 150bhp / 340nm.

The 200 is produced for German taxation reasons and is basically the same as the 220, just a downgraded ECU mapping. Taxi's generally buy them in Germany, and as one of the taxi drivers I was talking to mentioned, he'd bought the 200 with the intention to change the ECU after warranty had expired. He also saved several thousand Euro's on buying the 200 over the 220, for the same car!

Actually I am down 2bhp! If you check MB Technical data the E220Cdi is rated at 150bhp.

MB dataI have for the facelift 210 with 220cdi engine (which was the original question) is 143hp. Not that 143, 148 or 150 would make any difference in reality

thx for that guys.
i was wondering because i just bought a W210 220 CDI and in my opinion drives very similar to the cars i've driven back in Holland when I used to be a taxi driver, and they were 200CDI's. mind you that would be 5-6 years ago.....
still drives very nicely tho!

next question(related): anybody experience with K&N and tuning boxes on this car? for example dragon?
couldn't really find anything yet on the forum....
could find mainly the question being asked but never a good answer....
thx again, RP

Tuning boxes on the modern CDIs are allegedly fine. You will lose a bit of economy on the autos as you can't take advantage of the increase in torque and change up earlier like you would with a manual. Other than that, they are a good thing. I've certainly never heard anything bad, at least against the better ones.

K&N however, I'm not convinced about.
A merc air filter is pretty big so they don't have a greater surface area.So they must achieve their improvement by allowing larger "chunks of air" through. This is in effect, reducing the filtration and can therefore have a detrimenal effect on the life of the MAS.

morgue na snelheid! .... sorry if it isnt 100%, my Dutch is Afrikaans (9 years), which is more akin to Flemish!

In English for UK peeps! MAS = Morgue After Speed

But really, its the Mass Airflow Sensor, using a wheatstone bridge, and hot film wires, detects how much air is flowing through a pipe en-route to the engine.

Sorry to be a pain in the preverbial! But the W210 E220Cdi data of 150 bhp is listed on the MB website.

The new facelift E220CDi due out in July this year is rated at 170bhp and is quoted in the latest Mercedes magazine.

Why are you sorry?
Do you have a link to the page?
Here's one for 143hp http://www.mercedes-benz.co.in/shr_e_class_tech.html
I have the data from the uk brochure from 03.03.00, which is what I quoted above. If you want I can attach a picture of the relevant page tomorrow.

Blobcat - thats the Indian site. Even says they build the 'New' (I had one 5 years ago) 240 v6 in India.
The 150 is quoted in http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/con...lass_saloon/technical_data/diesel_models.html

The 170bhp 220 will be interesting. Makes it as powerful as my 270 and presumably more economical into the bargain. Diesels seem to be going from strength to strength. Maybe I'll have a 220 next!
