CGI indicates the model is a turbocharged petrol engine.
Have not heard any reports of these being troublesome.

The engines I would avoid are the Blue Tec which have the ad blue tanks. Nothing but trouble I have read
I have a turbocharged Mercedes engine myself and fully recommend them!

Not much reported on her about them but I don’t think they were very popular due to having a 1.8 litre power plant.
I would certainly have a good test drive before parting with cash the E class is a big heavy car especially when fully loaded. Engine wise the E220cdi and E350cdi were the most popular probably at a ratio of 20-1 in favour of derv.

CGI is compressed gasoline injection. Essentially it’s like a common rail diesel in many ways. The injectors are directly into the combustion chamber, rather than into the inlet manifold and being drawn in past the valves. Stratified charge means better fuel economy. On the whole they are very reliable, the only downside being that the intake valves can suffer some coking because they aren’t being washed constantly by fuel passing.

@Lilltlebrooklyn on here had a C250Cgi S204 and I'm pretty sure regrets selling it. Although we love our S204 C220Cdi, in a way I regret not offering to buy it!

Hi,

Yes I have a 350 CGI E Class estate.. I love it.. and I have come to realise that they are quite rare.

@Uncle Benz has given a good synopsis above.

I love mine, it has 292 BHP according to the manual. It is on 215k miles, and i'm not sure if that has affected the power output or not, but either way it's got plenty of poke in it and is very refined. Sometimes at a traffic light, I have found myself tapping the accelerator to see if the engine is still running.

Mine currently burns about 1 to 1.5 litres oil in 750 miles. I believe the valve stem seals are gone and I will be repairing DIY - If not DIY I think this would be a very very expensive job. That said, the M272 engine is often reputed to burn a lot of oil..

I can absolutely recommend this engine... I can't see myself giving mine up unless I crash it or the government says I can't drive it anymore.

My non CGI M272 doesn't use any oil - only on 110K miles though...;)

Interesting. In any case, I know mine is shagged because if I leave it idle or stop start traffic for long enough and floor it... all hell breaks loose LMAO.

I found our CGI SLK to be a bit noisy, a kind of tappy sound.

Injectors I guess.

Not very Mercedes.

Oh yes, I didn't mention that. It certainly does sound muck tappier than my friends non CGI S 350... It basically sounds tappy like a diesel does, which I have been told is due to the common rail aspect to it.

I always thought it was tappets/lifters on my high miler but apparently they are all like that. I have gotten over it.

I think most modern petrols are direct injection now so they all sound like it

So is the 1.8 E200 CGI BlueEfficiency Avantgarde one of these? No just looked it up and it is for diesels.
My last 3 EClass estate have been E200 and never noticed any problem with power when loaded.
