I'm about to change the cam cover gasket (one piece rubber gasket on a '89 190E duplex chain). Do I:

a) clean the metal surfaces of the cylinder head & cam cover and fit the gasket 'dry'?
b) oil the surfaces of the gasket and fit it 'wet'?
c) apply some 'instant gasket' or silicon sealer or something to the mating surfaces of the gasket and fit it?
d) do something else?

Any advice welcomed, cheers.

Ben.

My advice would be to fit it 'dry' after cleaning the surfaces thoroughly. Definitely would not use any silicon sealant etc.

You may want to drain the oil before removing the rocker cover, otherwise you'll have a pool of oil over the garden floor and down the sides of the block.

Ensure you retighten the rocker cover bolts to the correct torque settings - overtighten at your peril !

Finally, don't remove rocker cover whilst engine is hot - after draining oil, allow a couple of hours for head to cool, then remove.

Thanks for your info.

Do you know what the torques are please?
Will change the cover at the same time as an oil change so that's covered.

From memory, I think the torque setting is 25Nm, but I shall double check in my manual this evening (I am at work at the moment) and post up.

cheers
